K. R. Rowe does an amazing job weaving two stories together in this romantic mystery. Amber and Blue begins with some back story, setting the stage for the mystery portion of the novel. Afterward, we are knee deep in an enthralling romance. The second story is what throws the reader for a loop, but it's a good loop. Without any spoilers, I'll simply tell you that the main character, Grace, finds herself falling in love with another, Lucien....having `forgotten' her first love, Alex.
When Alex and Lucien began competing for Grace's love, I found myself rooting for Alex, and desperately wondered if other readers felt the same. K. R. Rowe pulled the storylines together very well and left the ending without a subtle cliff hanger, which I really felt was clever. I personally think there is much more impact when a series draws the reader to the next novel with a strong story alone, and the author does this very successfully in Amber and Blue.
The author has very poetic prose, which added a certain flair to the novel. I found myself re-reading certain passages, thinking they would make beautiful poems.
Here are some excerpts from Amber and Blue that I particularly enjoyed:
The reluctant bartender frowned as she splashed him another shot of tequila. He threw back his head, tossed it down in one gulp, and wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
"That's a nice shirt," he said with a crude gesture. "Can I talk you out of it?"
The clouds angrily gathered in the west, turning the sky from clear blue to gloomy swirling shades of gray. The wild spring wind picked up, and twisted the leaves over and around their heads signalling that a rainstorm was on its way. The gruelling walk took them over a rise and dropped away to a flat area at the bottom of a hill.
"This risk wasn't in my employment contract," he said as he put his lips to the hollow of her throat.
"What risk is that?"
"Being seduced by the boss's daughter."
"Check the benefits section," she said.
He wanted to keep her forever, but if her memory returned, he would be no better than a common kidnapper.
The sanitarium sat isolated and silent. Its sleek modern design stood in sharp contrast to the surrounding lush green farmlands. Like a gleaming Rolex on the arm of an Amish, it defied one's normal perception.
At the end of the path, they came to a halt and stared up at the majestic falls above them. Like a lion, it roared while it warned of its power, and spilled like a tattered wall of curtains, into the clear plunge-pool below. The mist hung thick and heavy in a cloud of droplets, saturating all that it touched. Like a multi-colored gift from the falls, the sun danced gently in tune with the water. Coming together as one, a perfect rainbow was born.
"A rose cannot bloom without the sunshine and a man cannot exist without love."
"You have nothing to be sorry for, little one," he said softly in her ear. "This has always been beyond your power. You can contain the passion of your heart no more than I can control the breath that I take,"
Just beautiful K. R. Rowe. Simply beautiful writing. Well done! I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Amber and Blue edition by K R Rowe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I read finished the book, but frankly, I could've put it down after the first 100 pages and not have been unhappy.
The blurb made it sound very interesting, but I had problems with the fact that it supposedly took place in the future (c. 2100) and yet life hadn't changed in any way other than there had been a division in Canada. The action in the story was very repetitive.
It was however, a quick read. I finished it in 2 days.
This story was not what I expected. When I first started reading it, I thought uh oh, a book that doesn't fit my personality. If you are looking for a futuristic book, this is not the one. Yes this is based in the future, but the how the romance is written is incredible. The author does a wonderful job of focusing on the romance between and love. This book has twists and turns that will keep you wanting to read more. I have to admit, I hope the United States and Canada do not turn out how the author describes, but the romance is incredible. I don't want to give any spoilers, so if you want to read a book that will keep you on your toes and not wanting to put it down, this is one of those books. I found myself reading it every chance I got.
This is a hard book to peg! Is it a classic romance? A traditional adventure tale? It really manages a good combination of both. I am not a romance reader at all but this book had good, taut action with such great characters that I was sucked into the romance dynamics almost without realizing it. They just made sense as an integral part of the conflict. The latter portion of the book was more romance focused, so less sentimental readers like myself might wish for a bit more gunplay at this point - but what the heck, it's still a well-paced story that had me flipping pages right 'till the end. Nice work!
This is a good read. Has some interesting characters. The story is of the future when the world becomes over-populated and the structure we know breaks down, with unrest in Canada spilling over into the United States. There is complicated romance, with competing interest in the lead female character. I enjoyed some of the stories about real places around Chattanooga, as I have spent enough time there over the years to know most of the terrain covered in this story.
The ending sets up the sequel, which I understand is in the works. I intend to read it too.
Amber and Blue is a tangled mixture of romance and futuristic thriller.
Through gross negligence, well-to-do young Grace's life is in peril. Alex, a teen raised in the mountains, stumbles upon the life or death situation and saves Grace. Though she is haunted by Alex's blue eyes, she is young enough that any other physical traits of his are lost to her. Alex though keeps a careful eye on her from the distance, hoping to keep this young girl safe from harm.
Their worlds are impossibly different. Set in the future, population growth has been the key to the sustaining the Earths resources. It is also a tool used by the wealthy to manipulate the classes and ensure their descendants success. Set in Tennessee, the northern portion of the US reverts to the wild. Quebec is a lawless land, populated by those prepared to wreak havoc on the American gentry. Here we meet Andre and Lucien. Mercenaries looking for a wealthy victim to ransom.
Lucien, with his dark brooding looks, plays a significant role in Grace's life. Their roles changing from kidnapper and victim to potential lovers.
Though many aspects of this book were compelling to me I found the layer of Sebastien, Grace's mentally and emotionally twisted fiancé to be too much. For me the book would have been stronger had this portion been left out. It serves to bring Alex back into the forefront of Grace's memories, but I believe the other plot lines were strong enough. Also, the beginning of the book introduces us to future Earth. I would have enjoyed reading more details about it.
