Lord Hornblower Hornblower Saga Paperback C S Forester Books
Good read, but nowhere near the quality of the earlier Hornblower books. The original three part series, later consolidated into the original "Captain Horatio Hornblower," where filled with the agonies of the young Hornblower trying to rise from nothing through the ranks of the British navy. They are filled with action and wonderful descriptions of naval life in the days of sail. In this one, the struggles are over. He is now Sir Horatio, Knight of the Bath, Brother in Law of the Duke of Wellington and, frankly, just a little stuffy. After the original Hornblower, I recall that subsequent books were serialized in the Saturday Evening Post and subsequently published with titles like "Mr Midshipman Hornblower," "Lieutenant Hornblower," and "Hornblower and the Atropos." All of them them are set in the time of the hero's efforts not only to have immediate success against overwhelming odds but also work his way upward in the ranks. I would particularly recommend "Lt. Hornblower," which is the only book in the series not told from the perspective of the hero but rather as seen by Lt. Bush, a primary character in most of the succeeding books.

Lord Hornblower Hornblower Saga Paperback C S Forester Books Reviews
In my opinion the Hornblower novels and stories by C.S. Forester have no equal in sea-going adventure. The reason is that Forester is a superb storyteller. One test - for me anyway - is that I can finish a book and be as ready to read it again as to go on to the next book in the series. I was introduced to Hornblower when I was in high school in the 1940's, and I've loved the books ever since.
I enjoyed the book and how it brought to close one of my favorite characters. I many of the books in the series in the 1970s and remembered how much I enjoyed the then it was great catching up with the story again and finishing it. I recommend the series to everyone looking for adventure.
For those of you who want their Hornblower books to be all sailing and fighting action, then you may have to turn to other books in the series. For those of you who like a good mix of character-driven plot, romantic escapades, political intrigue, as well as good old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure, then this one is for you.
This novel starts like many of the others in the series, with Hornblower receiving orders to perform a particular mission, this time to investigate and deal with a mutinous ship/crew. And he sets out to it with purpose. However, he accomplishes that mission in fairly short order and, in typical Hornblower fashion, brilliantly recognizes the larger picture and seizes an opportunity to take the battle to the enemy with potentially war-wide consequences.
This novel is a very important one in the series as it wraps up several story lines, both personal to Hornblower himself as well as generally to the progress of the war against Napolean. The characters are swept up in the rapidly changing ebb and flow of the greater conflict; it is indeed the best of times and the worst of times all in the space of a few chapters. As we near the end of the Hornblower saga (chronologically at any rate), it just keeps getting better and better.
I agree with some reviewers, that the naval battles seem rote and "paint by numbers," and generally the whole book seems to lack something. It's still good in that the reader knows darn well that Boney will meet his doom in Russia (and Hornblower, of course, doesn't know that), and so, I wanted to see how the book turns-out with regard to that plot twist. The best so far (I'm reading them mostly in order they were written) was the trilogy---Beat to Quarters and the next two after that.
Again C. S. Forrester managed to intertwine E flush history and intriguing story to bring that history to light and portray the inner workings of that era of histury
Moral questions that he has to deal with are evident in everyday life today. Ask yourself as you read it "What would I do in such an instance?"
Adventure galore and yes, it is war so there is some sadness and bloodshed. A love story or two in the series but there is no sexual contact and Hornblower acts the perfect British Gentleman.
Fortunately, most of this book is another excellent Hornblower book. But the last 20 percent was just average, bordering on being ridiculous. With all the other reviews here it's not necessary for me to go into much more detail than that. I thought it was a four-star book, typical of the outstanding merit of this saga of a legendary character. I'm only about halfway through the Hornblower books and am looking forward to reading the rest. As others have noted, Forester did not write the Hornblower books in strict chronological order, so I caution readers of this book not to draw any conclusions before you complete it.
