From the first words, I knew I'd enjoy this book. It is a very well written story with a lot of impact. I always enjoy the details Janette Oke puts in the times from the past. Reading what a character in the book thinks and feels like is very revealing and oftentimes makes me think. Times have changed, but people haven't necessarily changed in all things; but as always, Janette Oke puts faith in God in her writings in some way in which I can relate. This book gets quite detailed in how a man and woman look at life as they joined through a mail ordered bride service and a varied household of personalities between them and their seven (I counted all of them) children. She writes about concerns of life for Kathleen, leaving a family (of sorts), traveling across the ocean to meet a man she didn't know anything about. Also, about the doubts of the man who just can't believe he's gone and ordered a bride through the mail, any more than Kathleen can believe what she's done in signing on as a mail order bride. They are two rather desperate people, Donnigan, a man of self-made substance in the remote West and Kathleen, a fiery Irish girl with a disability and trying family circumstances.

Janette Oke has this to say about mail order brides in the Prologue "We know from history that these marriages did occur. But what do we really know about them?" Her research and imagination resulted in this story. Janette Oke writes honestly about the hardships of people, with a hinge of faith in God, or their attempts to answer those questions honestly. Some find one thing, others find another.

Doubts, problems, broken hearts, lives, quests for something more and great characters. I was surprised at Wallis' character, even Lucas' character. I loved that Erma and Kathleen met and the way their stories unfolded. Peg was interesting and Risa was something else. I love the way each of Donnigan's and Kathleen's six (I counted them again) children related to their folks, pranks, serious questions and God. You get to know the characters and family quite well before Janette Oke introduces faith and God into the stories. It takes time for them to process what they think and feel about faith in God, if they can figure out who He is and why. The trigger for the search involves one of the seven children.

A Bride for Donnigan Women of the West #7 Janette Oke 9781581651379 Books Reviews

I have read all the prairie books and i give this one a four stars because even though i find it to be a good book, i think theres less biblical references in this one. And the inspirational part of that saga was really great for me.
I so loved this book, I adore the books by Janette Oke. this one also spoke to me about the bitterness I, and many people carry in their hearts.
I would have like to seen Donnigan and Kathleen's search happen earlier in the book, but other than that it's a beautiful story.
I began reading Janette Oke when I was in high school. I fell in love with her writing. A Bride for Donnigan is one of my favorites. I own all of her books in paperbook form, and now most on my kindle. I love the way she makes living for God something natural, not unattainable or hard, for that's the way it should be in real life.
This is not the typical mail order bride story. It is about a mail order bride, Kathleen, and Donnigan met, married, fell in love and raised their family while searching for the Prince of Peace and forgiveness. All on their own with the Holy Spirit's guidance. Beautifully told by this godly and prolific author, Janet Oke. A great story for teen girls, as well as, us just older youth.
This book is good butt it's one that is hard to read in a way because you were expecting something and in the end you get the blessing of knowing how easy it is to know the Lord. It's basically about the struggle of a family who have no guidance but the Bible to find out of the Salvation of Jesus. I recommend that everybody reads this book. Even I feel closer to God. Don't give up on it in places but keep going because the end is worth it
This story has to be the sweetest I have read in years! It was pure and upright, with a full Christian focus, especially near the end. It tells the story of a young Irish girl who has faced more than one tragedy in her life and out of desperation turns to an option she likely never would have considered in better circumstances shipping herself to America to become the wife of a man she knows nothing about. On the other side of the Atlantic, a young man living in the frontier has signed up for a "mail order bride" also out of desperation born from loneliness. Their epic meeting and journey to love, a family of their own, and finding faith in Jesus Christ is nothing short of beautiful. I was sorry to reach the end and can't wait to read it again.
I liked the fact that evem in their fear of the unknown, both Kathleen and Donnigan took a leap of faith. From that difficult first year they continued to grow in their personal relationship as their family grew. They felt the conviction that they must learn about GOD in order to properly raise their children in preparation for the life to come after this temporary time on earth. They studied GOD's Word until it brought them to salvation. They still realized from the witness of their neighbor who had been raised in a faith filled home that it is by personal choice that we come to a point of confession and asking for forgiveness through the Holy Sacrifice of Jesus.
